Library Guide for Users from outside the University

Permitted Users

The library is open to citizens who intend to conduct academic research and study using library materials. Those who only seek a place to sit are not allowed to use the library. Please note that children, students, and students preparing for entrance exams under 18 years of age are not permitted to use the library, as a general rule.

 

Library Hours

Monday-Friday   8:40 a.m. ~ 10:00 p.m.

During university summer and winter vacations, and

from the 3rd week of March to March 31: 8:40 a.m. ~ 5:00 p.m.

Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays: 12:00 p.m. ~ 6:00 p.m.

Closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays during university spring and winter vacations

[Vacations: Spring (April 1-3), Summer (August 11-September 30), Winter (December 25-January 10)]

 

 

Closed Days

Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays during university spring and winter vacations

All-university summer holidays (August 13-14)

The end and the beginning of the year (December 25-January 4)

The 4th Wednesday of each month except for examination periods

Other: Occasional temporary closing of the library

Services Available

The available services range from reading, borrowing, and photocopying of  library materials to the reference service in the central library.

*If you seek to borrow books, your own library card is required.

*Personal computers (PCs) in the reading room are not available.

 (Only PCs at the library counter are available for searching the library collection.)

*Audiovisual materials such as videotapes and DVDs are not available.

*Interlibrary loan services (photocopying of literature and the loan of books) are not available.

 

★ Library Entrance Procedure

Please fill out Application for Use of Library (valid only for the day) at the library counter.

Please inform a staff member at the counter if you plan to re-enter the library again on the same day.

*If you have applied for and received your own library card, you may enter the library by scanning your card at the entrance gate.

 

★ Issuance of Library Card

 Users living or working in Kumamoto Prefecture and seeking to borrow books are eligible for library cards. Identification (Driver’s license etc.) and a postal item addressed to the applicant to confirm the applicant’s mailing address are required to apply. Please fill out the application form for a library card.

    Library cards are valid only for the year of issue. (Expiration date: March 31, 2010)

 

★ Renewal of Library Card

Users who wish to continue borrowing books in the following year should present [their current library card] and [identification] to renew the card. If your address has been changed, a postal item addressed to the applicant is also required to confirm the new address.

*Renewal procedure for the following year will start from March 1, 2010.

 

★ Reading

・ You can freely read materials in the reading room and stacks inside the library.

・ For access to books in the old stacks and the collection of works of each faculty, please apply at the library counter.

・ A separate application is required to view the Eisei collection as well as rare books and the special collection. Please contact the library counter in advance.

・ Materials in the basement stacks are also available. Please fill out the Application for Stack Use at the entrance and place any personal items other than valuables or writing tools in a locker before entering the stacks.

★ Loan

・ Materials available for loan Books in the reading room and stacks in the central library.

・ Numbers of books for loan, loan periods, renewals 5 vols. ・ 14 days ・ renewable 2 times

・ Please submit the books you want to borrow at the counter with your library card.

・ You can renew books that you are borrowing. Please bring the books with your library card to the library counter for renewal within the loan period.

・ The automatic loan machine is available for loans and renewal.

・ You are responsible for replacing any damaged or lost books. Damaged or lost books should be immediately reported to the counter.

 

★ Returning Books

・ Return books to the counter within the loan period.

・ If you fail to return books by the due date, your privilege of borrowing books will be suspended for a certain period.

・ When the library is closed, please return books to the book post in front of the entrance.

 

★ Photocopying

・ Reproduction of parts of library materials for personal research is permitted as long as copyright protection is observed. Please fill out the Application Form for Photocopying and use the coin-operated copy machines in the library.

 

★ Reference Service

The reference service gives you advice and assistance regarding the library guide as well as search for materials and information. Please feel free to ask the staff members at the reference counter.

 

On Using the Library

・ Please use public transportation to visit the library as parking spaces are limited.

・ Users must be quiet in the library.

・ No food, drinks, or smoking are allowed in the library.

・ Turn off cellular phones in the library.

・ Please refrain from using the library during examination periods due to increased use by students.

  Examination periods   First semester: July 16 ~ August 5

Second semester: January 26 ~ February 15
